THE VEGAN DIARIES: Fat Gay Vegan writes a book

A year ago I wrote a post about surviving Veganuary, my first tip was to surround yourself with vegans. This year I would still recommend that for anyone trying Veganuary, new vegans, struggling vegans or old timer vegans because it is good to feel like you’re part of a community who are trying make a positive mark on the planet. With that in mind I am here to tell you all to read Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give a Sh!t by Sean O’Callaghan no matter where your are in your vegan journey.

Sean refers to himself as a friendly uncle who is here to help you through your vegan journey. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS. Sean writes with such a kind intelligence that makes me, a vegan who celebrated her second veganniversary (yes that’s a word) on 1st, feel like I’m discovering veganism for the first time. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give a Sh!t a couple of weeks before Christmas and I read it in a week (unheard of for me). It is jam packed full of great advice, quotes from long time vegans and quick foods to try at home.

So what is my favourite part of the book?

Sean eloquently suggests that being a vegan activist starts from being a firm but polite vegan and saying 4 magic words:

No thanks, I’m vegan

Why did I never think of this? I have always shied away from declaring that I’m vegan when I turn down food because I’ve convinced myself that by telling people I was vegan before they asked that I’d be turning into one of those preachy vegans that I never liked. So although I don’t make new years resolutions, this year I’m going to try to be more forward about being vegan and use those magic 4 words.

Anyway, read it for yourself. It was released today so go, go, go! Get old of your copy Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink and Live Like You Give a Sh!t published by Nourish Books pronto!

  1. Hi, last year I took part in your diary and wrote something silly, about not staying vegan but more emphasis on vegetarian and animal welfare, just to let you know I have remained vegan even though I need to stick to a strict fodmap diet, which restricts my protein sources immensely. I can’t find you on Facebook so thought I’d let you know via email! Best wishes Emma Akehurst x
